“Motorcycles are cool and all, but getting the necessary paperwork to own one is more painful than a stack of rusty nail nachos. Ditch those day-ruiners at the DMV and cruise the streets with a FlyKly electric bike ($1,990). Every FlyKly is federally classified as a bicycle, so despite the motor, there’s no need for a license. The lithium-ion battery is super clean, ready for charging in any standard wall outlet, and it gets you 40-miles per charge. If the sub-20 mph top speed is too slow for you, just remember the top speed on the DMV line: 7 iph (inches per hour). Zing!”

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

FlyKly is part of an ongoing trend of sustainable urbanization in which cycling and urban farming have become strange bedfellows.

New York, New York – December, 2011 -

When one pictures an American farmer, the typical image does not include skyscrapers.

These days though, a new trend has emerged in the United States. At it’s heart, it seems to be centered around sustainability and self-sufficiency. It should prove no surprise then that the humble bicycle has emerged as the vehicle of this sustainable revolution.

“I think it makes sense,” commented Niko Klansek, CEO and Founder of FlyKly “bicycles and electric bicycles are literally powered by the people.”

Again and again, everywhere from New York to Miami to Guadalajara, urban farming and cyclist rights emerge together.

In Guadalajara, the Paseo De Todos–the local Critical Mass chapter–”regularly churns out up to 5,000 riders to celebrate and demand safer cycling conditions” according to the Street Films website.

In Miami, the Urban Times reports an upsurge in “permaculture classes, urban farming, green hotel renovations, vegan restaurants, more and more bike lanes”.

Grist reports on the rapid increase in urban farming in New York City, that global symbol of un-countrified urban life, citing three different farmers: “Annie Novak from Eagle Street Rooftop Farm in Greenpoint, Abu Talib from Taqwa Community Farm in the Bronx, and Jack Algiere from the Stone Barns Center.”

Niko commented, “I think people are looking for freedom and for a way to make positive contributions to their community, FlyKly allows both of these things.”

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

FlyKly is emerging as an integral part of localized, community and environmentally oriented neighborhoods in urban and suburban spaces

New York, New York – December, 2011 -

It looks like the kids, in fact, were not alright.

In addition to excessive teen angst, suburban design and planning has come under increasing criticism. The New York Times recently declared the “Death of the Fringe Suburb” and issued a call for “mixed-income, walkable cities and suburbs that will support the knowledge economy, promote environmental sustainability and create jobs.”

These new built environments will still require an evolved mode of transit that is aligned with updated economic and environmental goals.

“The FlyKly Electric Bike is in many ways the perfect ‘community’ vehicle” said Niko Klansek, FlyKly CEO. “It was designed with connection in mind: the direct connection our actions have to the environment, to our neighborhoods, to all the places we pass through.”

The FlyKly Bike does indeed live up to these claims–it is a nearly silent, zero emissions vehicle. The egalitarian nature of the design extends to how easy it is to ride and the lack of licensing or registration requirements in most states.

Occasionally at FlyKly we come across small articles that really resonate with us.

A recent article from Grist, an esteemed independent green news source, highlights how big urban changes are happening at the local, neighborhood level.

“While cities have been leaders in the effort to combat climate change, much of the action within cities occurs at the neighborhood level. “The neighborhood is a geography, a scale that resonates with people,” says Rob Bennett, executive director of the nonprofit Portland Sustainability Institute. “Neighborhoods have always been a powerful and important part of how we view city-building, and how we view ourselves as citizens.”

The Robert-Moses era of massive, top down planning seems to have come to end.

At FlyKly we believe in creating small, local changes that create disproportionately large, global effects.
Do FlyKly bikes do this? Absolutely.
When you choose to ride FlyKly, you are choosing to travel in a way that is beautiful, quiet and clean. This may seem like a small choice, but the effects add up. You’re helping the air be a little cleaner, the streets to be a little more peaceful.

Making an impact doesn’t have to be a huge endeavor. Sometimes it can be a small thing. Sometimes it can be about how you get there.

FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION

FlyKly has built their product around one of the most advanced and quickly developing technologies on the planet.

New York, New York – November, 2011 -

France is slated to open the world’s largest tidal energy farm in 2012. By 2041, most of our energy could be beamed in wirelessly–from space.

Perpetual motion machines may remain a physical impossibility, but impending technological advances might just fool the layman.

Sustainable energy generation and battery technologies have begun to develop at an exponential rate. Their convergence–i.e. batteries that are charged by energy generated by the waves, wind and sun–heralds a new and rapidly approaching era.

Of course, the number and type of devices that are ready to plug into this near-perpetual, clean power grid is already vast. Anything electrically powered, from your computer to cell phone to microwave, is ready to plug into the rapidly improving matrix of sustainable power. There is one major gap of technologies that are built around combustion fuels: every major form of transportation.

Like every rule, there are some exceptions. FlyKly, a New York based electric bike company, is one of the big ones.

“We use lithium-ion batteries to power every FlyKly,” asserted Niko Klansek, the young CEO of the growing outfit, “It’s hands down the best value to the customer and to the planet.”

He isn’t wrong. Among some of the more impressive stats FlyKly batteries offer: 1,000 miles for $1 of electricity, four hours to charge and a 32,000 mile riding lifespan. At about 12 pounds, FlyKly batteries are also incredibly light, unlike their clunkier (and less clean) lead-acid cousins.

Ivana Vasic, the creative director at FlyKly commented, “We really designed the FlyKly around the battery–the simplicity, the ease of use, the cleanliness of the aesthetic. All of this was inspired by the technology that powers our bikes.”

Lithium-ion technology, also employed by several other large companies, is improving by leaps and bounds. Researchers at Northwestern University have recently claimed to increase the charging speed and capacity of li-on technology by a factor of ten by using a specially crafted graphene electrode, while increasing the overall battery life.
